The union of students in ireland is delighted to run the why research matters video competition 2022 in cooperation with the irish research council. This competition aims to showcase the varied and high-quality work being undertaken by postgraduate researchers across the island. We ask the creative minds of the island’s postgraduate research community to produce a short video presentation about their research, and why it matters. Submissions are open from august 20th – september 10th, with winners to be announced by september 30th. The submitted videos will be assessed and shortlisted by the irc and usi, with the winner being chosen from the shortlist by an external judging panel.

Competitors at the fleadh are of any age, and come from around the world to compete. Competitions are in four age categories (under 12, 12-15, 15-18 and senior) and include most traditional irish instruments (fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, banjo, accordion, etc. ) there are competitions for singing, both in english and in irish and also for ensembles (pipe and ceílí bands, duets and trios, etc. ). Competitors from regions with qualifying rounds must first qualify at the regional level before competing in the championship round. In ireland, for example, musicians must be among the prizewinners in their county and then provincial fleadh before heading to the final round at the all-ireland.

Eye on nature competition/exhibition 2022, has just arrived in portumna castle gardens. Rte and the national botanic gardens of ireland with the office of public works present, eye on nature, irelands newest national wildlife and nature photography exhibition. These photographs represent the rich natural heritage that ireland has to offer, showcasing our islands biodiversity. This year’s competition received an overwhelming response with over 3,000 entries. The finalists on view in portumna castle gardens include the overall winner who received a trophy and a prize of €1000. Come to visit and see if you can guess which photo won the prize.

Grainne oates (founder of quitch) originally from sligo but now based in australia has run this competition successfully in australia and new zealand over the past few years and is now offering the same fun learning opportunity to irish students.
